PIR ZIA
INAYAT KHAN
Sufi Teacher & Scholar
Pir Zia Inayat Khan is a Sufi master and spiritual guide carrying forward a rich lineage of mystical wisdom rooted in the teachings of his grandfather, Hazrat Inayat Khan, and his father, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. Raised in the United States, he studied Persian Literature at the University of London and earned his doctorate in Religion from Duke University, bringing together deep scholarship and a lifelong devotion to the spiritual path.
Trained in Sufism by his father, Pir Zia was confirmed as his spiritual successor in 2000. Since Pir Vilayat’s passing in 2004, he has served as Pir-o-Murshid and President of the Inayatiyya, guiding Sufi communities around the world in the pursuit of love, harmony, beauty, and the recognition of the unity underlying all spiritual traditions.
Through the founding of the Suluk Academy, Pir Zia has created spaces for dedicated spiritual study, contemplative practice, and the deepening of inner wisdom. His work unfolds through the Inayatiyya’s lodges at Fazal Manzil in Suresnes, France, and the Astana in Richmond, Virginia, while his writings explore the Sufi path, the mystical unity of religions, and the timeless quest for truth.
An author, teacher, and devoted steward of the mystical tradition, Pir Zia invites seekers to look beyond the boundaries that divide humanity and discover the sacred unity woven through all existence.
At Guardians of the Sacred, Pir Zia joins a circle of Elders and Wisdom Keepers, carrying forward the enduring teachings of the Sufi path and offering a vision of humanity rooted in compassion, spiritual awakening, and the remembrance that all life is connected.
“Our challenge, both individually & collectively, is to seek an integration that honors the past & animates the present with deep respect for all traditions.”
