We are honored to welcome Cheryl Demmert Fairbanks, Esq., a Tlingit-Tsimpshian attorney, justice, teacher, and advocate whose life’s work has been devoted to serving Indigenous peoples and strengthening tribal sovereignty. Born in Ketchikan, Alaska, Cheryl has walked a path of service that weaves together law, policy, education, and community healing.

She has served as a Tribal Court of Appeals Justice, a professor of law, and a mentor to countless students and leaders. Her work in Indian law has encompassed tribal-state relations, peacemaking, family and community mediation, and the protection of Indigenous rights. As Interim Co-Director of the Native American Budget and Policy Institute at the University of New Mexico, she continues to guide critical work that supports Native communities and their futures.

Cheryl’s leadership also extends into her policy work, where she was instrumental in establishing initiatives such as the Indian Child Welfare Desk, the New Mexico Office of Indian Tourism, the University of New Mexico Indian Law Clinic, and the Indian Arts and Crafts Act.

With a foundation in education as a teacher and school administrator before entering law, she has carried the spirit of guidance and mentorship throughout her life. We recognize Cheryl Demmert Fairbanks not only for her remarkable achievements but for her devotion to justice, community, and the well-being of Indigenous peoples. With great respect, we welcome her presence and wisdom into this sacred circle.
