SABRA KAUKA

Hawaiian Cultural Teacher & Practitioner

Sabra Kauka is celebrated as one of Kauaʻi’s influential nā wāhine alakaʻi (women leaders), dedicating her life to preserving Native Hawaiian culture, caring for the land, and passing ancestral knowledge to future generations. Though her early life took her across many cultures and countries, the calling of her Native Hawaiian community ultimately brought her home to Kauaʻi, where she has become a respected cultural leader and devoted steward of the island’s heritage.

As a kumu (teacher) of Hawaiian studies and hula, Sabra has guided generations of young people and adults in the traditions, values, and living wisdom of Hawaiʻi. Her work encompasses cultural education, traditional arts, environmental stewardship, and the protection of sacred and historic places. As a founding member and past president of Nā Pali Coast ʻOhana, she has championed the preservation of the natural and cultural treasures of Nā Pali Coast State Park, including the ancient Hawaiian village of Nualolo Kai.

Throughout her journey, Sabra has served as an educator, historian, journalist, environmentalist, and dedicated community advocate. Her contributions extend to cultural restoration, traditional kapa-making, and initiatives that honor the relationship between people, place, and ancestral memory. As an advisor and active participant in gatherings with Elders, she continues to help create spaces where Indigenous knowledge and intergenerational connection can flourish.

At Guardians of the Sacred, Sabra joins a circle of Elders and Wisdom Keepers carrying the living traditions of their peoples. Through her lifelong commitment to Hawaiian culture, the land, and future generations, she reminds us of our responsibility to honor our ancestors, care for the places that sustain us, and ensure that sacred knowledge continues to live in the hearts of those who follow.

“The love of the land & the people, is the basis of our culture. It’s in the presence of the breath of life & as human beings.”
